Why does Linda call her husband Montag?

Montag is the family name. Linda's name is Linda Montag, her husband's name is Guy Montag. So why does Linda call Guy, her husband, by his last name, Montag?

reply

because it is about a future world where all emotion and feeling has been gouged out of J Doe, so a first name would be seen as way too ...... you know...

I thought it was odd too, as it wasn't just Linda. When she had the other women over, they called him Montag as well. As one of the other posters mentioned, may be it was just to highlight the impersonality of the brave new world.

Yet Montag calls his wife Linda.

The way I figure it, in some situations it is quite common to call people by their surname and maybe this part of the film was a pointer to those situations.

The society in the film makes me think of a future Britain had the Nazis won World War 2 (yeah, I know, nobody wins in war). Sometimes Nazi leaders are referred to by their full names, but usually it is surname only. The same can be true of the art world, as in 'Bradbury' and 'Truffaut'.

Now, I am not saying Hitler's wife called him Hitler. I am just linking this style of address to certain figures, and how they are regarded in society, to the authority figures in this film. When Montag insists on reading the book to his wife's friends one of them defers to his wishes like he is a king or something.

I think it is an English thing.

In John Mortimer's "Rumpole of the Bailey" Hilda Rumpole always calls Horace Rumpole "Rumpole".

On the other hand, Horace always calls Hilda "She who must be obeyed."

In the novel I believe she calls to him as Guy. However everyone else including the narrator refers to him as Montag. Perhaps it was written in the scrip this way because he is Montag in the novel and the director didn't think to change it, though he should've.
