Best 'Black' westerns

Being a western fan,(love those saturday morning westerns with "Rocky Lane, Durango Kid, Johnny Mack Brown and those threesome like the mesqueteers) I think that Duel at Diablo, Sargeant Rutledge, and the Scalphunters were the best "Black" wetern movies.

Recent: Posse ( Mario Van Peebles version) and El Diablo. And lest we forget Glory!
older: Skin Game and Guns Of The Magnificent Seven

Two of these have Louis Gossett.

What makes it a "black western?" Does a movie with a major character who is black qualify? Or does the lead have to be black? If it's the former, I'll throw in "The Cowboys" with John Wayne and Roscoe Lee Browne. If the latter, "Buffalo Soldiers" with Danny Glover. And don't forget "Lonesome Dove" also with Danny Glover.

Danny Glover was quite good in the western SILVERADO.

Remember this exchange:

MAL JOHNSON: "Now, I don't wanna kill you, and you don't wanna be dead."

No one's mentioned TAKE A HARD RIDE or 100 RIFLES.

Why are we labeling these movies "Black" Westerns. I have never seen anyone label all white casted movies as White Westerns... LOL

reply

For me, a "black Western" would be something with a predominantly black cast probably with racial issues being addressed at some point, and post-1970, with a black director or screenwriter involved.
POSSE
THE LEGEND of *beep* CHARLEY (and sequels)
SERGEANT RUTLEDGE
The Herb Jeffries films (racial issues not addressed directly but in subtext)
BUCK AND THE PREACHER
MAN AND BOY (unjustly ignored and forgotten)
100 RIFLES

Because the person that began this post wants to have a discussion on black westerns, that's why!

Why do you have to point out or ask about the call for list? And for your info, they never had to call a western white, until other nationalities began doing westerns. It was white people that created the label black western, Italian Spaghetti Westerns,!

Other nationalities do this when they want to tell their story or take the lead, like The Miss Black America Pageant, because, for a while, there were no black contestants or winners in the Miss America Pageant.

They never called it The White Miss America Pageant, because, duh, white people created it and white usually were the only contestants.
