Mel Ferrer supposed to act in the film

in the french archival documentary on the Criterion dvd it is a shot with Mel Ferrer with mustache on the set , and he is supposed to be acting in the film. No mention on the commentary of why he is not in the film. I wonder if anyone knows anything about that.
