Everyone seems to hate this film...

...But they're completely wrong because it's excellent.

What reaches them could never have missed them, and what misses them could never have reached them.

'Tis.

The more Godard films I watch the more I loathe his work. The film looks good but its content is abysmal.

reply

It's early Godard, he is not yet a master of what he was about to become. The real good Godard starts in the '80s.

His films in the '60s are not quite perfect yet.

reply

This is possibly the only Godard film I truly like.

Well maybe "everyone" would not hate it if Godard had actually managed to think of something to say before setting out to film this "excellence". Or had some kind of a story to tell. Or some kind of an aesthetically interesting vision to put forth. What we got instead is this so-called "essay" as his apologists seem to put it - a bunch of banal, incoherent, sophomoric rambling that has apparently something to do with the perils of American imperialism and urban alienation. How unfortunate then that there´s no rhyme or reason to the way these soul deadening tendencies are translated onto film; making vague gestures is, according to Mr Godard, apparently all that´s required to constitute an ideological statement. And then them buggers wonder why he´s so often called "pretentious"... It´s just bloody awful. Awful.

I agree for the most part.. Unfortunately, 99% of the movies made in my lifetime (I'm 36) are crap, so I have to watch this.

I could have done without the common retarded questions and comments, one scene for example..
"Where were you?"
"At the garage"
"How do you know it is a garage? Maybe it is a pool or something else" -- this is probably why people run away when I mention a French movie. "Half of them are avante-garde, which means its French for BS."

"Avante-garde... Hmmm, that means it's good." or the typical, "That's-what-its-supposed-to-be" defense of everything.

But the lead actress might have been the prettiest woman I've ever seen in a movie, and most familiar names don't seem to be. I just saw a picture of Marina Vlady at 71 years of age, still very pretty. Must be a Russian thing?
