Canon?

I've not heard of this movie before 10 min ago.
is this considered Part of the Doctor who universe or is this like that other movie where the doctor was human ?

reply

No the movie is not canon, the doctor is human.

reply

Canon on movie series is a complete childish concept since movies are just fiction coming from scriptwriters' imagination.

reply

Canons go BOOM!

reply

It couldn't be further from canon!

He introduces himself as "I am Doctor Who" instead of "I am The Doctor"

and then "this is my niece and my granddaughter" WTF ???

That would mean he has either a son or daughter AND a brother or sister!

Sacrilege !!!

Come on lads, bags of swank!

reply

Sacrilege?

The original Doctor, when played by William Hartnell, had a granddaughter, Susan, amongst his first companions.
This movie is a remake of one of those serials from the second season/series.

reply

Joe X2525 is right.

The point is, there was no canon in the early seasons of Doctor Who. Granted, the character in the TV series never referred to himself as "Doctor Who", but it was not until the necessity arose of replacing William Hartnell in the part that the character was re-conceived as an alien being with regenerative powers. The whole "Time Lord" mythos was developed even later, when Patrick Troughton in turn was due to leave, and only became an integral aspect of the show during Jon Pertwee's tenure.

"Duck, I says..."

reply

Yes.
I actually don't know much about Doctor Who, but just started watching from the beginning.
Initially, they only say that the Doctor (Susan as well) is an alien, but not where he's from, why, or anything about his regenerative abilities (or however it's described. I'm not there yet.)

In one of the earlier episodes, Ian is complaining to Barbara about how little they know about him and says, "He says he's a doctor. Doctor who?" because they don't even know his name, or why he doesn't have one.
You'd think it's a conversation they might have had sometime while traveling together for years.

Because they say so little though, it meant they could come up with more backstory and canon later as needed.

reply

Correct, and as you say (which most people tend to forget) it is stated that He and Susan are alien from the very first episode.

reply

I don't know why so many people get all out of sorts about this.

Peter Cushing is clearly "The Doctor" from ANOTHER universe! (He said his TARDIS could travel to "any place, in any time, in any universe!")

This movie has as much "canon" to it's original William Hartnell's Doctor, as Star Wars does to Star Trek, they both feature "STAR" in the title. Close enough
