Can anyone name a samurai more bad-ass than Ryunosuke? If so, please tell me so I can check it out
Its such a shame they never got to make the sequel to this, the relationship between Ryunosuke and Toranosuke was building up so nicely. Nakadai and Mifune were always dynamite on screen together
Can someone define this 'bad ass' for a non-American speaker? If it means what I think it means I don't think Ryunosuke can be described as 'bad-ass' at all.
Bad-ass is difficult to explain, but I would certainly agree that Ryunosuke could be described as bad-ass. I would sooner separate the two words, and call him bad, and an ass, though very skilled.
Sanjuro, however, of "Yogimbo" and "Sanjuro" could definitely be considered bad-ass.
The thing is, bad-ass often denotes someone very skilled and confident while still having likeable, relatable, often humane traits.
Debt and debt and debt and debt and debt and then All will be enslaved.
But Ryunosuke is definitely skilled and confident in his skill - although I agree about his strange character. I wouldn't call him unlikable, there were glimpses of humanity behind the sociopath side, in fact there were hints that the human inside was still very much alive, but even so, I definitely agree that the crazy mask was goddamn thick.
Thing is that I wouldn't necessarily supplement "skilled and cool" in the badass definition with "likable". I'd call Frank from Once Upon a Time in the West "badass", even though he was utterly evil. But, as an example that should better clarify the notion (the way I see it), in The Seven Samurai I would call Kyuzo "badass", but not Kikuchiyo - both are skilled, but Toshi's character is not confident and cool.
And yes, Sanjuro is also a badass ...Come to think of it, perhaps they also need a touch of dark and brooding along with the skill and the cool, to make them badasses? Wait, I suspect that everybody has their own notion of badass, so maybe a more general definition would be "I call 'badass' a skillful fighter with whom I'm in awe", whereby the type of fight and the sources of awe may vary according to the type of movie involved and the psychology of the one talking about it.
there's a highway that is curling up like smoke above his shoulder
Yes, you are correct - Ryunosuke cannot be described as a "bad-ass". A true "bad-ass" connotes good rather than evil and is not a weak and insecure human being, which Ryunosuke is.
However, many weak and insecure human beings used the term "bad-ass" to describe objects of their affection. So, it is important to consider not only Ryunosuke, but those who have posted here, including the O.P., within this context.
Based upon their posts, I would posit that they are as weak and insecure as Ryunosuke!
If you wish to see a true "bad-ass", please see Ogami Itto of the Lone Wolf and Cub series.
I know this response will never get seen, but Hanshir? Tsugumo of Harakiri is a TOTAL bad-ass, especially since he spends the majority of his movie just telling his story and staring fools down.
