Sound effect

I liked this film a great deal, but what was with the sound effect used when someone got killed by a sword? It was a "splorch," like what you'd hear if someone stepped on a piece of overripe fruit. I don't think I've encountered another film that used anything like this sort of sound when someone gets struck by a sword.
