Samurai movie fans

I watched a samurai movie a while ago that I don't know the name of. The final scene had the hero badly injured/dying and looking exhausted, but every time an enemy approached he 'exploded' into action. It was set in the samurai era and the hero fought his way up a staircase during that final scene. Admittedly it's not a lot to go on, but I found the scene so striking I figured someone else did too.
