ive never seen a movie end like that.

ill give it two stars, since it was pretty cool watching that standoff during the match. I wish there was more of that. bah.

what was that movie about that old swordmaster who dueld with a younger swordmaster and killed him by dueling him through the night and in the morning his opponent was facing the sun so he was killed because he couldnt see? that was a pretty good samurai movie too i should see that again. What was it called?

It ends the way it does because it's based on about three-quarters of the first book of a long series of books. They never got round to the sequels. Other versions carry the story- which is more of the same- on.
Other- fuller- versions here: http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0050902/

hmm. i kinda want to read the story now. what is it called?

Dai-bosatsu tôge of course! It means Great Bodhisattva Pass, where it begins.

It was serialised in newspapers and is a candidate for the longest novel ever written- nearly fifty volumes. The first volume was translated into English in a very rare edition in in the 1920s. A snip at about US$700 at www.abe.com

reply

wow so there arent any more translations? is there any way to get a copy of it? at a bookstore perhaps? have you read it?

reply

There's a copy of- the only, as far as I know- translation of Vol I on www.abe.com at a few hundred quid. I haven't read it. Try google for more info.

Actually I thought that it ended precisely like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. For a different reason, of course, but still similar narrative situation and similar visual effect.

A really weird ending. The movie just builds this battle between Nakadai and that brother of the man he killed, but it never happens. I don't know what to think of it. And yes, I realize that this was supposed to be the first part of the trilogy, but no other movies were made.

By the way, does anybody know the body count?

I think it's pretty generally acknowledged that most of the fighting in the last scene isn't really happening. He's hallucinating.

Pretty sure this won't ever get seen, but...

I haven't seen all the Lone Wolf and Cub movies, but I'm pretty sure there's a duel in the manga where Itto wins a fight by using sun positioning, so maybe one of those?

Also I believe one of the Miyamoto Musashi "Samurai" films (Samurai I, II, and III) starting Toshiro Mifune might contain the scene you're talking about.
