A truly great spaghetti western

IMO this ranks up with Il Grande Silenzio and The Mercenary as Corbucci's best. It might not be as iconic as Django, but overall I feel it's the better crafted movie, with a very original premise and interesting twists and turns. This deserves a lot more praise and attention than imdb's number of votes suggests it's getting...

I guess Corbucci just isn't the director for me, the only one of his films that I was really impressed with was Companeros. Django was good too, but The Mercenary, The Great Silence, and now The Hellbenders just seemed ok to me.

Corbucci was one of the best western spaghetti directors ever, even more entertaining than Sergio Leone himself.

I don't think Corbucci is as good a director as Leone but his films certainly are rarely dull, always entertaining and usually thought provoking. Oddly, Companeros is the one out of the Corbucci films I've seen (Navajo Joe and all the ones you mentioned minus The Mercenary) that I wasn't hugely fond of. Can't put my finger on it but it just didn't blow me away. It wasn't bad but not great either.

Oh, I forgot Navajo Joe, or possibly just saw it later. Yeah, it was also ok. But I don't know, looking back I guess Django was better than I gave it credit for in my earlier post here.

Kind of weird that we seem to have opposite opinions on him though.

I agree I liked this movie a lot.

I just saw it for the first time and I enjoyed it and will be looking for a physical copy. As far as Corbucci westerns go, I’d give his four big ones 5/5 stars with The Hellbenders having 4/5. I loved the story but felt it could have possibly been better with different lead actors. I loved the kidnapped girl and I liked seeing the guy who got his ear cut off in Django (1966) as one of the brothers. These films tend to grow on me so I’m sure my rating will improve with more viewings. The great Morricone score goes without saying. 👍
