Of course the simple thing for the officer to do is send out flankers right, left, and forward, to secure the men against ambush. But no! Everyone trots straight ahead, and are wiped out to the man.

Next, Cotton's gang, freshly away from Civil War combat in 1865, attack with hand grenades! HAND GRENADES IN 1865? I don't think so. Try World War I fifty years later.
