Bubber had only a few months left on his sentence. How dumb. All he had to do was wait a few months and he'd be a free man.

That's because Bubber was stupid. He did what he wanted, when he wanted. He didn't think about consequences or the future. He probably got roped into it by the other inmate who used him as a dupe to get caught by the cops while he made his getaway.

He was the wild kid in town and constantly in trouble growing up, for the same reasons.

He explained why he did it, because he had just reached the end. Also, what may have only been a few months to others who spoke of the escape was actually a tear and three days to Bubber. What was unspoken was his concern that his wife may not have been remaining entirely loyal to him while he was inside.
