Hard to believe for a small, conservative Texas town in the mid 60s.

Why?? Why in hell is it hard to believe? They didn't screw around in Texas? What else was there to do besides drink and screw around?

Some of the comments about this film are truly ridiculous.

Been there, done that (in Tennessee, not Texas) and got the scars to prove it.

I remember adults doing that when I was a young child. I also remember other adults going out and lynching blacks just for fun. My parents always kept me inside when that was going. This was in the early 60s. I'm glad those bad old days are (hopefully) over.

The movie was trying to show that the 60s had created changes, but it was also a cynical look at how the morality of the town had declined and people were trapped into their roles and identities that they were bored with themselves and always looking for any excitement, no matter how idiotic that was.
