Why are real historical figures given different names in this film?

Luther Adler clearly played David Ben-Gurion, but the IMDB cast list gives the character name as Jacob Zion. Why?

I'm pretty certain Yul Brynner is playing Moshe Dayan, yet his character name is Asher. Why?

Who's John Wayne's character supposed to be based on? General George Marshall?
If so, why is he called General Randolph?

Just curious.

It happens pretty frequently when someone is alive and famous and loosely portrayed in a movie. Sometimes people ask that their real names not be used. Other times, real people are portrayed in an unflattering light - to avoid a lawsuit, the movie makers can say "It wasn't you! It was this other guy."

John Wayne's character wears the Screaming Eagle patch of the 101st Airborne Division, so he would definitely not be General George Marshall, who was the Chief of Staff. It might be General Maxwell Taylor, although at the time the movie was set, he was a Superintendent at West Point.
