....at the end - a real cop-out, I thought: don't worry, she's not dead!

To be fair, none of the women were dead - they were "frozen", for lack of a better word. As Jim Dale said, they could be put back the way they were. Still, the joke didn't really make sense given Sid wouldn't/hadn't put Joan back. It's just a cute way of wrapping up the film, and I guess a bit of a copout from her being frozen forever.
