HUGE Plot Hole in the Movie!!!

I really love this movie. I mean, it's one of my all time favorites. But, the thing is, something odd occurred to me while recently re-watching it.
When Blondie and Tuco are put in the Union-controlled prison camp, Tuco sees Angel-Eyes dressed as a Union officer and asks Blondie if it really is him. However, Blondie and Tuco had never personally met Angel-Eyes during the duration of the film yet.
The plot hole just gets wider when Tuco is invited by Angel-Eyes to eat. Angel-Eyes knows Tuco by name, plus Tuco calls Angel-Eyes an "old friend".
The only thing that was even remotely close to Blondie and Tuco meeting Angel-Eyes would be during Tuco's second hanging scene, in which Angel-Eyes notices that Blondie will shoot off Tuco's noose, thus saving him. However, I took that as just something Angel-Eyes noticed was going on, and that they were not people he recognized.
I'm really shocked I haven't read anything about this huge plot-hole anywhere. Was there perhaps a deleted scene where the three met before the prison-camp scene?

I just always assumed that Tuco and Angel-Eyes were possible acquaintances sometime long ago in the past. Both of those guys had checkered pasts. They might of been briefly in some sort of gang at one point, but then eventually went their separate ways...

It is my understanding that The Good.... is the third of a trilogy with these three characters..! I think the first was a Fistfull of Dollars and A Few dollars more...!

Tuco knew Angel Eyes before the events of the movie took place. Blondie also knew Angel Eyes or knew who he was.

I just finished watching it from start to finish and I think you have a point. I guess Angel Eyes is known by his reputation, and it's possible they know of each other.

That would show that Angel Eyes is wise to their tricks, so they may have a past history, even if he isn't friends with them.

Of course, the movie is 2h59min long, so it's possible that another scene was cut that featured them together.

They obviously knew each other from the past. They are gunslingers and run with similar crowds. They probably rode together in the past. Just as angel eyes says..."not that you're any tougher than tuco"...they knew each other pretty well at some point in the past.

Yes. Amazing posters can't pick up on the idea of the trio knowing each other in the past. Thought it would be quite clear without spelling it out.

And that's because it's not a plot hole.

reply

They had apparently met prior to the time depicted in the movie.

reply

Nu-uh! They didn't exist, previously!!!
