THE GREATEST FILM EVER MADE

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was the first western that I ever saw and it was a perfect introduction to the genre. I can tell you that I was very tempted to award it 10/10, something that I am yet to do. It seems as if almost everything about this film is absolutely perfect. The story is simple, three men search for gold, but the writers and director managed to build an entire epic adventure out of it, the three hour run time is no issue as Leone creates such an epic world, filled with amazing characters and breathtaking scenery. Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach are all legendary and form the greatest leads in any film.
The photography - my god! This has the most beautiful, stunning cinematography of any film ever, those gorgeous wide shots of the landscapes and of course the tense, extreme close ups, pure genius. The final standoff is filmed with pure brilliance and is the best climax to any motion picture, after such build up it culminates in a purely epic standoff.
In my opinion, it is the music that is what makes this film truly great, I will have the gold theme playing at my funeral. The music is just so epic and expertly composed, true masterwork.

The Good the Bad an the Ugly is not pure violence as you seem to be implying, certain people with less open minds may consider it only that, and yes it is violent at times but the violence never overshadows the story or characters, many of those films you find that belong in the top 10 are also violent and although they are a ll great, I just enjoyed myself the most watching this film and the best films are those that can be watched time and time again, each time becoming a more valuable experience and I find that this is completely true for The Good the Bad and the Ugly.
Besides, this is my opinion, I'm not afraid to express my love for the less critcally acclaimed films, as opposed to just hopping onto the critical bandwagon, constantly agreeing with popular opinion. Even the greats are flawed and for me The Good the Bad and the Ugly is no exception but as previously mentioned I enjoy it more than any other film, of course film like the Shawshank Redemption are much more valuable and have a more profound tale to tell but just because it is well made, it cannot guarantee entertainment which for me should be the truest aim of any film, to entertain and to offer an escape to its audience.

LOL those ratings are not by critics. There by fans who created accounts to vote up their favorite movies. The Top 250 list has little to no credibility.

You know what? I agree. Seen thousands of movies in my time, but this one is my #1 favorite and the film I consider the best.

The first ten minutes are either astonishing or astonishingly boring depending in who you ask.

It's an awesome opening IMO.

Once Upon a Time in the West
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
are one of the best movies ever made if not the best. Star Wars also there (3 epidodes).

Just had to comment on your short list there, and its pretty solid in my opinion. Loved Der Untergang and Good,Bad Ugly of course. I have never seen Dr Strangelove. I must however.

No...it's not.

It's a very, very good movie but it's Not even a top 10 western of all time.

Here's a *beep* test to see where you stand...you used terms like "the most beautiful, stunning cinematography of any film ever"...

Which movie has better cinematography? This or Searchers? This or 2011 True Grit? This or The Empire Strikes Back? 2001? Apocalypse Now?

Enough with the hyperbole...you Tarantino fans are insufferable.

Interestingly enough I have yet to see a Quentin Tarantino film, insane I know. No I just loved this film. It had a sense of adventure, great characters, stunning cinematography, the greatest film score of all time, a simple yet epic story and a timeless quality.

I'd be interested to know of any 'better' westerns that you know of (other than Once Upon A Time In The West) as I felt that this film would easily top any others but I could be wrong. I mean just the other day I saw the film Apocalypto which may actually have topped this, I'm not sure yet.

Yeah this is the greatest movie ever.

(for me along with Blade Runner Final Cut, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Empire Strikes Back, The Fellowship of the Ring EE and Prometheus)

OP, i think the film stands by itself -- not just as a Western, but as a classic of any genre. The great Westerns are: Red River, Winchester 73 (and any other Anthony Mann/James Stewart ones), Shane, Butch Cassidy and Sundance, Once Upon a time in the West; Magnificent 7; and Rio Bravo. And this film stands alongside them.

As for greatest film ever, you'd have to compare this to Godfather 1/2.

The thing I don't like about this movie...despite me still giving 10 outta 10, is the sillyness...Blondie shooting angeleyes hat into the grave and his gun as well and switching his cigar from the left to right side of his mouth...then tuco shoots blondes hat off in the desert after shooting his canteen...there's tons of other stuff . Tuco putting the closed sign in the gun salesmens mouth. Why put silly stuff in the movie instead of just keeping it solid? Was this comic relief?? Totally unnecessary in my opinion. Can u imagine Josey Wales doing that stuff?? Lol
