I remember this movie vividly... even though I've never actually seen it

For me, 'Born Free' is to movies what Stephen Hawking's 'A Brief History of Time' is to books.

I once read that although 'Brief History' is the most popular coffee-table book in history, less than 10% of the people who own a copy have actually ever read it.

As a young child of the 70's, I remember 'Born Free' - vividly. I remember it was about Elsa the lioness, and the Jane Goodall-esque British conservationist Joy who raised her. And of course I remember the song. Boy, do I remember the song.

I remember it being somewhat overly sappy, and heavy on the late 60s/early 70s just-about-everyone-is-a-flower-child euphoria. But like the 70s, I remember it fondly.

Funny thing is, I don't think I ever actually saw the movie. I just remember that it always seemed to be starting just as whatever I was watching was over, or that it was over just before whatever I wanted to watch was coming on. I always kind of wanted to see it - just not enough to actually sit down and watch it.

Funny that I have never seemed the movie, either. I have heard of the song many times and loved it. Yes, I plan on seeing the movie someday.

You also mentioned that less than 10% of the people who own a copy of Stephen Hawking's 'A Brief History of Time' have actually ever read it. Yes, I'm one of them--I have only read a few pages and.....well, you know....

Joy wasn't british...

I'd forgive the OP for thinking she was British. The actress played her with a British accent, which, of course, was inaccurate for the real Joy Adamson.

I only realized she wasn't British after reading this thread.

I saw the movie in the theater when it first came out. Elsa and a lion had a big fight and people started leaving before the movie ended thinking they had to get away before the rush. But the best part was yet to come, Elsa and her three cubs came to visit and the people who were in such a hurry to leave missed that. haha on them. Mom and I walked home from the movie theater to our apartment and that was the best day of my life.
