Perfect Soundtrack

I just attended a "flying prom" held by the Virginia Arts Festival featuring vintage aircraft flying to accompany music performed by the Virginia Symphony. They played a suite of music from The Blue Max while 2 replica DR-1 triplanes flew and maneuvered overhead. What a thrill! The music really evoked the the theme of the movie and it was stunning to watch real aircraft while hearing it.

I couldn't agree with you more. One of Jerry Goldsmith's best.

Yes, yes, yes. Maybe I'm showing my age but I feel that generally soundtracks of that period, especially in higher budget films, are superior to scores today. Basically they "add" to the film when needed and are not intrusive, while many today just get in the way.

Finally, all those rising minor chords when Bruno is on his fatal flight really ramp of the tragic finale. Very well done.

Goldsmith, an acknowledged master, said that a movie needs only about half an hour of music, used judiciously. The Twilight Time bluray includes a separate isolated score track; only the film and the music, including tracks not used in the final film, with commentary on the music and Goldsmith.
