question about the Rolls Royce

What a super-fantastic car, BTW. Growing up in England, my father had a Roller, but our car was vintage and nothing like Hemmings's convertible.

When Thomas was lunching in the restaurant with Ron, he sees someone hanging around outside and leaves in pursuit. Finding no one, he walks back to his car, bends down, and pulls a handle at the very rear of the car. Why on earth did he do that?

I think he is just checking to see if the truck has been opened and/or if it is locked. Seeing
someone hanging around the car has made him wonder if someone broke into the trunk/ boot
of the car. At least, that's how I understood that action.
