Yes, I think so. The producer, Harold Hoffman, was asked that question, and merely laughed. I would take that as a Yes. That is why the film is not in my collection of horror films.

No cats sustained physical harm, but several were psychologically traumatized and had to attend lengthy therapy sessions for years afterwards.
