Finally on DVD

This film would probably have remained one of the most obscure films ever made if it weren't for that pic of Robyn Baker (as the wife) with the axe in her head dripping blood everywhere that used to show up in 1970's and 80's horror movie magazines - at a time when it was impossible to see the film! Shame the axe murder happens so fast onscreen, but it's still quite impressive. Other than that, this film feels like a talky and drawn out episode of The Outer Limits. Fun though.

I remember seeing this at the movies when I was a kid. (I'm old, lol) It was the opening feature of a double feature (remember those). I still have the image of the wife with the ax in her head and the wall this guy built. I remember one scene where he tried to electrocute the cat but he didn't die.

yeah. Its crazy that this is one of the movies that stick with me and I can't recall a thing from the main feature called "The Blood Drinkers".

The hatchet in the head scene was quite gruesome for 1966.

I re-signed on to IMDB just so I could comment on this movie.

I was 9 years old when I saw The Black Cat, also on a double feature with "The Blood Drinkers" (I never would have remembered the name of that flick without seeing your comment here).

The scene with the axe in the head gave me nightmares for weeks, and still sticks with me 50 years later.

I think my parents went to the adjacent theater to see The Sound of Music, which I wasn't interested in. That same year, we went to the drive-in movies to see The Ghost and Mr. Chicken--a very different scary movie!
