Great Film!

Greetings,

Not sure why people are complaining about this film. If you don't believe in God's word, then of course you won't like it. All the actors did a great job. I love Peter O'Toole's performance. I think he did an excelent job of portraying the angels.

Shalom,

Better scenery than a lot of films. I think the Noahs Ark sequence was the one that seemed the most real. It just felt like you got to know this pleasant family while on a long trip.

I very much agree~! O'Toole was magical and Scott was moving. I really liked Stephen Boyd as Nimrod, too. Very mysterious.

But for me, the ending where Abraham must sacrifice Isaac is the emotional peak. The utter faith shown here moved me greatly.

i am not the most religous person, but i have read the bible and this is an excellent film. it is cool to see the words of the bible transformed into a movie. this is a great movie and i will be buying it on dvd, even if youre a non believer check this film out.

are you serious?! this movie is awful, and it's not a declaration of faith at all. in my opinion, Huston used this film as a way of showing his disdain for the God of the Old Testament. And I don't think it's a coincidence that the voice of God and the serpent are played by the same person (Huston himself actually).

Huston originally intended for Laurence Olivier to be the voice of God but he was unavailable. Huston was the voice of God and the serpent; he also narrated and played Noah. He probably just did it to save money on a film that was already seriously overbudget and never completed in its intended form.

The others are right. This is a VERY good Bible based movie. Not every detail is perfectly aligned with the scripture. But the Bible isn't a movie script and common sense little pieces are put in the movie to make it flow narratively. The movie seems slow to some who are more interested in only the miracles of the Bible; but it is a beautiful portrayal of the stories it covers. I don't personally find it to be slow; I call it meditative. Creation is beautiful, Babel is exciting (mysterious was a good word in another post), Noah is poignant and kind of funny too (you know people used to laugh back then too) and George C. Scott as Abraham was an "inspired" choice. No other portrayal of Abraham had come close to what Scott did with this part.
But let this movie encourage you to read the first 22 chapters of Genesis yourself. If you are not familiar with the Bible this movie will help you make sense of what you read, but really the first part of Genesis is an easy read anyway and is a full and interesting story. Don't let the geneologies make you stumble. They are important to fill the gaps until the next time that God intervenes to reveal new things to man.

So they didn't include the Old Testament?

"Almost as good as "The Ten Commandments"."

Personally, i think The Bible blows The Ten Commandments away, at least on a few levels; the dialogue in this movie is much easier to swallow, for one. Also, this movie has an extremely surreal [ At times frightening ] atmosphere that The Ten Commandments never achieves, no doubt due to the wacky Italians involved in the production. Ha! The all-star cast helps out as well, of course.

I learned recently that Franco Nero [ Who plays Abel ] had the opportunity to become a Hollywood regular, partially due to The Bible, but he decided to remain a Euro-star rather than become just another Hollywood face. What a cool guy. =D And of course, watching George C. Scott rasp and wail as Abraham is awesome, heh... and what of the trippy Sodom & Gomorrah sequences? They're borderline pornographic for the era this film was shot in! I love the Italians! I love this movie!!!

I wouldn't mind seeing this sometime. How is the Noah's Ark segment?

I simply cannot believe how many people don't like this movie. I first saw it on a freezing winter night in 1978 when ABC showed it as a prime time movie presentation, and loved it instantly. I would even go so far as to call it a great movie. Great music score, great visuals, great pacing, great acting, etc. I am watching it right now on the Retro channel and it is at the Nimrod part of the film. It is riveting. The people panning it are wrong in my opinion.

Umm...The first 22 Chapters of Genesis ARE in the Old Testament!

I don't "believe" in "God's Word" (as limited to the Bible, anyway), and it's a favorite film. I always begin my annual Spring Epic-Fest with The Bible...In the Beginning and The Ten Commandments.

Wise policy. "Book Burning" in all its forms merely moves us all backward in time. “The Book of Eli” suggests that a good library (or intellectual seed bank) needs all the books it can hold in order to be complete.

I am a free spirit and I believe in God and I loved this film. I wish it was redone with our new technology we have in Hollywood.

I've always loved this film, but I think too much footage was spent on Noah and the ark. I wish more time would have been used to elaborate the entire Tower of Babel act. It's my favorite part of the movie.
