Lee Meriwether is still the best Catwoman by far

Despite the film's campy tone, she still captures the essence of the character better than any of the other actresses who played her on the big screen so far. Lee Meriwether brought the perfect mix of deviousness, charm, sex appeal, and commanding presence to the role. She could've easily played the part in a more serious Batman film and it would've worked just as well. She was also the hottest.

The only actress who comes close to rivalling her is Julie Newmar, but I think Lee wins ever so slightly by coming off a tougher gal than her. With Lee, had if they chose to make her get into fisticuffs with Bats, I could buy her actually being able to whoop his ass. Newmar is great as the sly, cunning seductress, but I don't think she would've worked as well in a more serious version.

Michelle Pfeiffer did a great job in Batman Returns, but the character was honestly written pretty haphazardly. Her motivations throughout were confusing, and her backstory resembled next to nothing of the comics. She puts on a great performance, but the script lets her down a fair bit. Had if her part was written better, she may well be the best.

Don't even get me started on Anne Hathaway. Never once did she ever convince me of being a sensual, manipulative cat burgler toying with men's minds. It just felt like watching a little girl play dress-up. She lacks the maturity to convincingly pull off the cunning, seductive nature of the part. She gets points for being the most faithful version of the character so far, but her performance left a lot to be desired. I even prefer Halle Berry in the role, to be honest. For all the flack that film gets, Halle's performance is far from being the source of its problems. She honestly did perfectly fine, even pretty good in some scenes.

Who's with me?

Julie Newmar first. Lee second, Eartha Kit, third. Doesn't really matter after that

Julie Newmar was always my favorite. I did prefer the more lighter and flirty take she had with Batman. Though Lee was fine, her cat cry, where it went on forever, was SOOOOOOO annoying. And she came off so angry. I just wasn't a fan and as a kid, didn't understand why it wasn't Newmar.

I have a better appreciation for Lee now that I am older, she's just not 'MY' catwoman.

Your post made me put Lee behind Eartha. I had forgotten about Lee's cat cry

RIGHT!!!???!?! I couldn't stand it. I still hear it in my head and I haven't watch that movie in over 5 years. MEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! lol

Halle Berry was not Selina Kyle, but another Catwoman. Was the movie even set in Gotham City? Halle looked great, though,

I think Anne Hathaway is the best Catwoman.

I'm not with you; I disagree on a lot of points.

Maybe the point I disagree with the most is on the writing in Batman Returns. I thought it was fine and although it's very strange, Pfeiffer was working with a better script than the '60s Catwomen. Her performance is gangbusters, too, but I like the script. For me, Pfeiffer was/is the best.

After Pfeiffer I'd go with Eartha Kitt. Maybe this is a case of Kitt's persona being larger than (fake) life and there's just something so, "Oh, boy!" perfect about Eartha Kitt doing this role, but it's great. It also suits the campy '60s show vibe purrrrfectly.

I didn't mind Hathaway. She had great scenes to do (although as a whole I have problems with the TDKR script), but I guess you're right insofar as she didn't do anything special with them. She had some of the best lines to wield in terms of comic book accuracy, but yeah...maybe that does bump her down the list since she had good material and didn't do anything special with it.

So, I guess after Kitt is where I'd file Meriwether. My first experience of the Batman TV show was actually through the film. Only after the film did I see the show. So, Meriwether kinda put Catwoman as a TV/film character on the map for me in some ways.

My ultimate ranking would be Pfeiffer, Kitt, Meriwether, Hathaway, Newmar, and I never saw Halle Berry, but I don't generally dig her as an actress, so...I'm guessing she'd be at the bottom.

The only question is how do they rank after Newmar.

reply

Julie Newmar's #1 for me. Although I did love Lee Meriwether, a close second.

Wasn't she on Barnaby Jones?

reply

Yes she was Barnaby’s daughter-in-law and assistant. She was also in The Time Tunnel as one of the scientists.
