Rank the Catwomen

1. Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns - One of my favorite female movie characters of all time and my favorite childhood movie. It's still in my top ten. Michelle Pfeiffer nailed the mousy secretary-turned vengeful anti-hero to a T. The costume, the voice, the attitude was all perfect. A tragic character that could have lived happily ever after with Bruce Wayne, but unfortunately she was beyond saving.

2. Adrienne Barbeau in Batman the Animated Series/The New Batman Adventures/Gotham Girls - Adrienne Barbeau's sultry voice was perfect for the character, and the writers did a good job with the character in my opinion. She didn't always get the best stories, but it was a great adaptation of the character.

3. Eliza Dushku in Batman: Year One/DC Showcase: Catwoman - Growing up watching her play Faith on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I always thought she'd make a great Selina Kyle. Although not live action, she does a great job with the voice in the stellar adapation of Frank Miller's origin story. Also, the DC Showcase Catwoman short was fun and the best solo Catwoman story we've gotten so far, outside of comics of course.

4. Anne Hathaway in The Dark Knight Rises - I was pleasantly surprised as I didn't think Christopher Nolan would include her in the trilogy. Although never referred to as Catwoman and sadly missing the trademark whip, Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle was a tough and sexy anti-hero whose costume was a mix between the classic 60's look with a bit of the new. I loved this interpretation of the character and I don't understand all the hate.

5. Lee Meriwether in Batman: The Movie - I grew up watching this movie as it was the only other Catwoman I had on VHS besides Batman Returns. Lee Meriwether was my first 60's Catwoman and that's why she's above the other two. You have to be in the right mood to appreciate the campiness, but on my last rewatch I had a great time remembering how fun and sexy she was. Although no Selina Kyle alter-ego, we got to see her pose as Russian reporter Miss Kitka and seduce Bruce Wayne and that was so much fun to watch.

6. Julie Newmar in Batman seasons 1&2 - I haven't seen all her episodes yet as I just finally got around to watching this series on bluray, having never seen it. I skipped ahead to the first Julie Newmar episode and the first Eartha Kitt episode. Is it obvious that Catwoman is my favorite character? I can totally she why she is so iconic. Loved the sexual innuendos and cat puns, and the way she toyed with Batman. And come on, that opening scene where you first see her whip come out of nowhere and then a closeup of her hand as her claws gut the class open, that was a great introduction for the character.

7. Eartha Kitt in Batman season 3 - The writing in "Catwoman's Dressed to Kill" was pretty terrible, but Eartha Kitt owned this role. That voice! Come on... so iconic. It was very brave for them at that time to go with a black Catwoman after Julie Newmar passed on coming back. The way I see it is that Julie played Selina Kyle, and this Catwoman is someone else who took her place after she was placed in prison for good.

8. Gina Gershon in The Batman - I have to admit I barely remember this show as I watched some of the first season when it aired but not since, but I think I liked this Catwoman. I remember Gerson's voice being great and I liked the costume, maybe I shouldn't have included this one.

9. Halle Berry in Catwoman - Everything about this movie is wrong. I don't completely blame Halle Berry (although I'm not a huge fan), I think she could have been great with a better script. I like her as Storm in the X-Men movies, but here... the story, the directing, the look of the movie, the interpretation of the character, the costume... everything is so bad. When I was a kid, I couldn't get anyone to see this with me. My dad let me go by myself and I was literally the only one in the theater. On opening weekend. And it's pretty obvious why. I don't understand why they couldn't just make a faithful Selina Kyle movie. And adding terrible hip-hop/r&b music just because they cast a black actress was pretty embarassing. Would that have been the music they went with if Ashley Judd accepted the role? Highly doubt it.
