Did Gassman dub his own lines in Italian?

I've just watched the original Italian version of this movie and one think struck me. Every time Gassman says his lines (with a Roman accent), his words come off out of synch with his lips. It looks like he is reading his lines in English in his scenes with Mickey Rooney, and in French when with Claudine Auger. Can someone confirm this? It's quite odd, considering it is an Italian production with the vast majority of the cast and crew being Italian, and since regional Italian accents (Roman vs. Fiorentine) play an important part in the plot.

Italian films, particularly of this vintage, are MOS (standing for "mitt out sound"). They are shot silently and then the dialogue and sound effects are later recorded in a sound studio. There's a wonderful documentary of Fellini making Satyracon that really shows this Italian-style in action. The entire film is dubbed in Italian or whatever language one wants.
