Was this the best script offered to Brando in 1965-66?

dont get me wrong. i thought THE APPALOOSA was a decent western.

but why would an actor of the calibre of BRANDO act in this? i know he wasnt interested in his career in the 60s. but he could have found something better to do than THE APPALOOSA.
