This film is totally dated

I am just watching it now and I find it irritating. I grew up in the 60's, I would have been 17 when this came out. I think the wife is the only credible character. Ellen's crying was over the top, her behaviour was unbelievable. I also ask as another poster did, did she ever work/have a career? I think briefly in a gallery. Did she give that up just for a once a week assignation? Was she not bored during the week? Ugh, going to turn it off. Can't stand it

I don't mind dated films because I'm pretty dated myself, but this just doesn't work. If this had a likable leading man (or "other" man) like Jack Lemmon it might have worked – or if it were a melodrama directed by Douglas Sirk. I think the cast, the direction and the script are the problem here.

I agree with you that it just didn't work. Wonder how the play went? Thinking of Jack Lemmon this film if it was black comedy it would have been The Apartment.

The play was pretty successful running for 16 months on Broadway. Sandy Dennis played Ellen, Don porter was cleves, and rosemary Murphy was Dorothy. Gene hackman was Cass. It did well.

It just goes to show that successful plays aren't always transformed into successful films.🐭
