Ok I’ll be that guy

I don’t get it. Help me out here.

I think the cinematography is brilliant but I was so bored I could barely follow it

I honestly want to get it but I think I need some perspectives from fans. I’ve seen Solaris and Stalker and really want to study this guys work. I think he’s a true artist

Solaris is Tarkovsky's most boring film, longshots of people sleeping in a drab early-70s Soviet space station (even though I still think it's great, Tarkovsky is my favorite director). I guess, for me, being hugely interested in history and Russia itself, every second was fascinating to me. It was like a camera was dropped in the Middle Ages.

Thanks!

So you watched it from a perspective of learning about Russia? Because to be honest I had no clue about the characters before I watched it. I had no prior knowledge

reply

The imagery of the reality of Middle Ages-life was fascinating to me. Nothing is glamorized; dirt, poverty, invasions, ignorance, and yet the humanity always seems to shine through. Despite his surroundings, Rublev, like many men before and after him, strived for something greater. I think, more than actual faith in God or religion themselves, it's about faith in humanity. The boy who made the bell was like a mirror for Andrei. He realized that despite his dire surroundings, he should not restrict himself from creating; showing the world beauty and humanity through his art.

By the way, Stalker is I my top ten, so I'm no casual.
