Which version should I watch?

I want to watch this film, because I hear it's good. Which version should I watch, the 183 minute version or the 205 minute version? Any suggestions?

The 205 minute version can be found with Criterion's DVD release. The quality is pretty poor (it's not terrible, but some of the visuals can be missed). It is letter-boxed as well.

The 183 minute version can be found on Blu-ray. I would say go for either the Artificial Eye (UK) or, what I think is currently the best transfer that I know of, the Russian Digital Element version. Both have English subtitles.

I saw the 205 minute version first, mostly because this is the most available version for those in the U.S. Having seen both. I can tell you that both cuts ultimately feel like the same film, but there are quite of few differences. Such as: differences in sound choice, shot order, shot length. Also, the 205 minute version includes more graphic imagery.

The 183 minute version, while missing some moments, might flow a little better. But if you see this with a Blu-ray copy, you'll notice the beauty in the photography and in the imagery and in the movement of what it is you are witnessing on screen. The sound is much cleaner and clearer. And, as I said, with some differences. You don't notice these visual things as much with the 205 minute version, mostly due to the quality of the source.

But I do think that the 205 minute version is worth seeing. In fact, we're pretty lucky to be able to see it, so I feel we should take up this opportunity. Perhaps it should be seen first, and then, once sunk in, you can revisit the film through the 183 minute version.

Which ever version you watch, you will certainly be seeing something very special!
