One thing I'd add to the ending! (Be careful, I got SPOILERS!)
When William Holden and Richard Widmark part their ways at film's end, it's a mutually amicable parting. As Alverez Kelly, though, I would have suddenly remembered back to when Widmark, as the Confederate officer, had shot off one of my fingers and, next, I'd've ran and caught up with him; the ensuing dialogue is as follows:
Kelly: Hey, Colonel Rossiter! Wait up! We got one more item of unfinished business!
Rossiter: Yeah? What's that?
Kelly: You mean you don't remember blowing off my index finger when I was unarmed and being held prisoner by you and your men?
Rossiter: [rolls eyes] Gimme a break! You still sore over THAT?
Kelly: Matter a' fact...yeah! [pulls out Smith & Wesson, shouts orders to Rossiter's company of men to back off or else he'll blow Rossiter's brains out; ducks into a nearby cabin with Rossiter as his captive; shoots off the index finger of Rossiter's left hand inside the cabin]
Rossiter: You bastard! [groans profusely]
Kelly: [congenially, all-smiles, even patting Rossiter on the back] It's okay, Rossiter, we're even now! Now, go on with your men to your next mission, and have a nice day!
