Is this movie merely for gorehounds?

Hey! This movie caught my interest, as I like documentaries that doesn't cencor stuff and shows reality as it is. Politically and not. This movie seems interesting!
But is it anything like that?

I kind of get the vibe that mondo-movies are watched by extreme horror and gorefans that wants to take "it one step further". Well, at the time being I'm not that interested in a Traces Of Death movie set in Africa.
Does this movie have any more substance than that? Is this a real movie with a political brood? Or are we talking fake snuff or something?

It seems like mondo movies have this very divided audience, but I do find the genre interesting. Cannibal Holocaust certainly had a message and a meaning. Does this one?

(Hope this didn't get too messy.)

Africa Addio is probably one of the most brilliant films I've ever seen... but it is also very... let me put it this way: Mondo does exploit. It seems when they began this film, they wanted to capture violence and gore for many of the reasons you said above. Yet, it seems that in the several years of their lives they spent in Africa, they found something more. Parts of the film exploit, are villanious, and maybe even racist (maybe not "boy you are inferior" racist but a somewhat imperialistic "dem' natives need civilization") but it also has moments of pure cinematic brilliance, and spurts of extreme intelligence. Some very interesting ideas are brought up, for every stupid moment or comment there is something worth thinking about, and even as we see real violence exploited on the screen, at times it really does reach something... I can't explain it, but it stuck with me.

It's a hard film to categorize, and it's not for everyone, but I think beneath all that is wrong with Africa Addio, there is something more, something yearning for a better world for everyone, even if the filmmakers find it hard not to be fascinated by the violence we can put each other through.
