The heavy influence of Godard

I tried to see it at the German Pavilion at Expo 67, but there was a mix-up in scheduling, so... Here it is, fifty years later, and I have to say it's interesting but certainly no masterpiece. Kluge sometimes gives the impression he doesn't trust his own talent; he relies too much on New Wave ideas and techniques. Anita does a flit from the building where she can't pay the rent, just as Anna Karina did in Vivre sa vie a few years before. The scenes with the lawyers have been seen many times before--we get it, that Anita is a sociopath whose employment prospects are practically nil (imagine her selling language lessons on the street!). I will say that Alexandra Kluge is often effective as an actress, but the anything-goes approach to filmmaking works against her.

It was pretty much Godard in German. Cool style but not enough for 85 minutes.
