These parts confused me. Maybe (and most likely) I wasn't paying attention, or they were just vague elements in general....
1. The man who is trampled to death by the horse at the beginning was....?
2. Why was the housekeeper killed? She wasn't in on the conspiracy. It seemed like the plague people just attacked anyone, if they deserved it or not.

The man killed at the beginning was one of the 5 involved in the death of Jeronimus Hauff. As for the maid, remember Kurt said the avenging spirits of the plague spreaders would come to kill everyone, whether innocent or guilty. They were angry at everyone in the village who blamed them for spreading the plague deliberately, so they killed indiscriminately.

Ahhh, thanks for the follow-up. I need to watch the film again. I remember enjoying it, for the most part, but also finding it a little lackluster in areas.
With these issues cleared up going back in, maybe I can enjoy it more on the second viewing.
