Poe

What writings of Edgar Allan Poe is this based on? I havn't seen it yet but would like to know if its based on specific stories or just a general interpretation of all of poes writing.

I was trying to figure that out myself; "The Masque of the Red Death", I suppose.

Yeah I've puzzled over this detail too. Best I can think of is that the film was made in 1964 when AIP's Roger Corman Poe series was still red hot. As with Margheriti's CASTLE OF BLOOD (DANSE MACABRE) they may have evoked Poe's name and literary style as a marketing gimmick. There certainly is precedent for doing that even outside of Italy, i.e. Edward Ulmer's THE BLACK CAT which was entirely new cloth, yet credited to Poe.

reply

In a word: NONE.
They simply used Poe's name to inspire interest.

reply

Not sure any specific Poe stories, but just some Poe-ish ideas. The Black Cat is an excellent example of a film using Poe's name and fame to attract an audience but having nothing to do with any Poe material. As if saying "based on the horror genre."
