Irwin Allen UNMASKED

In the entry for THE STORY OF MANKIND in THE FIFTY WORST FILMS OF ALL TIME of Michael and Harry Medved, IA is quoted as saying that telling history on film is like telling a bad joke twice, and that what you need is a gimmick.
So now you know why Allen treated history in such a gimmicky goofy way; he simply could not conceive that anybody would be interested in watching historical events and historical characters depicted in a serious and respectful manner. Irwin Allen was an Inane Ass!

When it comes to THE STORY OF MANKIND, I guess you can target Irwin the way you have, but I would like to think that Irwin is more remembered for his BIG FOUR science fantasy TV shows of the 1960s and the disaster movies of the 1970s.

Television audiences and SPONSORS were much different in the 60's than today. Also there wasn't a lot of choices of channels back then. No Cable or Satellite. So the appeal had to be broad in order to garner HUGE ratings that only 3 Networks could garner.

most larger cities had just the 4 networks (ABC.NBC.CBS.PBS) and maybe a couple of local UHF channels that was it.

Now a days i have no reason to watch any of them, except maybe their sub channels, which act like indie stations
