Overused plots

I have been a Star Trek fan since I was 7 and loved it, but now that I am old man and I am watching reruns and I am saddened by how many times they have used the "simple people worship a god/obelisk that is really a computer"

Or how about the computer/robot that either cannot understand love or is asked a schoolboy paradox riddle and then goes into a loop and starts to smoke.

Sheesh.

reply

Soooo, you don't love it anymore or just disappointed that it 'doesn't hold up'?

How about, "kids without the proper constraints who need a good spanking"? ("Charlie X," "Miri," "The Squire of Gothos," "And the Children Shall Lead.")

Overused plots are perhaps unfortunate, but not necessarily a sign of a poor episode. "The Doomsday Machine" and "The Immunity Syndrome" have similar storylines, but both are pretty good episodes.

Two Kirks.
Spock with emotions.
Scotty falling in love.
Transporter malfunctions.
The crew of the Enterprise being put to the test.
That no woman can resist Kirk's charms.
All aliens speak English. If fact, some better than most humans.

Spores/space sickness/alien entities make the crew behave uncharacteristically.
A planet full of people that resemble part of Earth's past.
Time traveling to the past.

The Enterprise encounters a dysfunctional civilization (eg, the US under Trump) which it sets right.

Sounds like a great story idea for Star Trek Continues.

reply

The only reason Trump was elected is that the day before the election some idiot went back in time to kill a Trex and crushed that butterfly. Star Trek has nothing to do with it.

He never said they did, he said they would correct it.

movieghoul; Donald Trump won the presidential election because 23yrs ago, some Democrats became "The New Democrats" (More Republican like). And later on, some more Democrats rose up to the 6 figure, yogurt eating, upper tax bracket, share/stock holding, non-meat eating elitist Democrats and forgot about 90% of the population.

reply

timmy: you're absolutely correct, it was the Republicans who brought the country back from the fiscal crisis of 2008 and then added 20 million folks to the health insurance rolls.

reply

It's not really a new thing. The richest people in Congress have always been Democrats.

netsez00; I (and everyone) think about this a lot. Landru and the Jubilee, The Giant Dinosaur Head computer and the clubing 2 death "solution", Apollo and his "Temple". The incredibly ancient robots (Ted Cassidy) WLGAMO being the only possible exception. A poster once said that Roddenberry was a devout atheist. Apollo, an ancient being who cannot figure-out 2 simply throw a meteor at The Enterprise. Or shield the temple with neutronium. But you must admit, they were all good.

Advanced aliens make the crew fight

Day of the Dove
The Gamesters of Triskelion
The Savage Curtain
Arena
Specter of the Gun

reply

I would add "Bread and Circuses," but I don't know that the Romans were advanced aliens.

Trelane sort of made Kirk fight in "Squire of Gothos."

reply

Were there many episodes with those plots? I recently watched the entire series for the first time but I can only remember a couple times people unknowingly worshiped computers: The Hawaiian planet where the guys had hair like Beavis & the planet where people went crazy in the street at a certain time.

DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

reply

Three episodes that I can recall off the top of my head, so it didn't happen all that often. You've probably just seen the show too many times.

reply

The wildly overused "malfunctioning holodeck" episodes were the reason I stopped watching Next Generation all those years ago. It was obvious when the writers needed a filler episode, they would just throw together some holodeck hijinks and the cast could play dress up for the week.
