Commodore Wesley was an idiot

In The Ultimate Computer, Wesley, in his messages both to the Enterprise and to Starfleet takes a tone implying that he thinks Kirk is responsible for the full-power attacks. So, they set up an elaborate field test for a new ship's computer that uses untested technology, and when things go horribly awry Wesley assumes that it must be because an experienced captain went crazy?

Does not bespeak good problem solving skills.

That seems to be one of the commonly mentioned flaws with the story. And it could have been fixed rather easily.

People are way too critical these days. Remember when you would watch a show and that would be an enjoyable hour or half hour. No, people have to pick apart everything. The show is 50 years old. I think they did real good for having about 3 weeks to make a show that nobody back then cared about.

reply

I bet that's why they're REALLY shutting down the boards! So we can all go back to a more innocent time when we just watched and enjoyed stuff, rather than picking it apart.

Yeah, Wesley was quite a "Crusher" of logic, wasn't he?

As I said. Times were very different 50 years ago with tv. This was a show that was almost cancelled every year, filmed on a shoestring budget and probably not taken too seriously as you can tell if you watched some of the episodes. Do you really think they were concerned with some inconsistencies of story writing for scripts that were probably written that day. They were lucky to have jobs. As fast as these were shot I think you can forgive some issues.

reply

^^ Exactly^^

I don't think we can hold episodic TV shows to the same standards are movies. I doubt Paramount thought these would be played more than few times after original broadcast.

But if forced to defend Welsey, remember that while Wesley knew the M5 could (probably) run operations of the ship, the designer/builder of M5 was on board and M5 had an "off" switch. Wesley probably didn't know that M5 could essentially hijack the ship and institute a communications blackout. Even Daystrom didn't know to what ends the M5 would go.

OTOH, why would they allow Enterprise to have fully loaded weapons available to a mostly untested computer?

Yes, it's also important to remember that computers were relatively new at that time. And "The Ultimate Computer" was one of the very first "computer takes over" stories ever thought of or written.

reply

Nnnaaww, sorry but The Twilight zone did a few of those stories. And The Outer Limits.

reply

What TZ did with computers wasn't the same. "The Brain Center at Whipple's" and "The Old Man in the Cave" for two examples.

reply

Early Doctor Who did those kind of stories as well.

$200,000 wasn't a shoe string budget 50 yrs ago.

Thank god these boards are closing. People are so thick headed.

I couldn't agree more. He ended up as the governor of a planet that was almost eaten by a giant living cloud in the animated series. Hope his skills had improved.

Commodore Dunsel......

reply

That seems to go for anyone named "Wesley" in Star Trek.
