Does anybody else dislike the CGI?

I like that they remastered the series for HD but everytime they show an external CGI scene it just seems out of place.

i agreed at first, but they really had to, the old fx would have looked horrible in hd

I think the CGI looks just fine. The pictures look nice and crisp and the color is vibrant.

Whenever I watch TOS on blu-ray, I select the original versions. I like them just fine on a modern HD TV.

I don't mind special effects that are considered awful. A lot of the time they show more imagination than all the computer generated stuff. I respect the fact that the old stuff required individuals and teams who would build things by the sweat of their brow with the materials they could procure. Not these geeks who use a software program (though that does require some pretty impressive skills in its own right).

I don't mind the CGI, because the space sequences and battles look better, but it concerns me on how the CGI itself is now starting to look dated. A trained eye can now see the pixels they used on some of the planets in space, or how plastic-looking some of the ships (not just the Enterprise) look.

I loved what they did with the floating space log---I mean Doomsday Machine. The slingshot around the sun also looked much better in that time-travel episode. I did like the way the planets looked in space, though. One major complaint both dad and I had was that in the original space shots, when the Enterprise was orbiting an alien world, they often looked like Mars, or just a colorful bowling ball, or too much like Earth. Now, the space views of the planets match the story so much better!

Technically there was no CGI in the original Star Trek series. They used a variety of other methods being used that era.

OP is talking about the "remastered" special effects that were done for hi-def broadcast. Those are most definitely CGI.

How the hell did I miss that? He was pretty clear.

I need my meds adjusted. LOL

I enjoy it. Especially since I get to see a better version of the Enterprise's battle with the Doomsday Machine. But by today's standards, even this CGI is starting to look dated. I doubt they will, but I'd love to see it re-done yet again.

I think they did a great job of improving the effects without going overboard.
