DVD is missing time!

I just bought the Space Ghost/Dino Boy DVD, and it clocks in at just under 22 minutes an episode! This is not the whole episode! At least two to three minutes have been cut out!

I've just gotten the DVD and am on the second disc at present. I'm sorry, but you're mistaken. I've been watching this cartoon since its debut in 1966. Additionally, I compiled the series on VHS back when TNT was running them. Nothing is missing from the episodes, but they originally had buffers which probably amounts to a full minute.

no tv show on dvd is exactly 30 minutes. they calculate 7 or 8 minutes for commercials and cut the episode accordingly.....and ease up on the exclamation points lol

I think I know what you were thinking here. Generally, TV shows of the 1960's ran around 25 minutes excluding commercials, however, it was common that animated shows for kids ran shorter even back then. 22 minutes was pretty standard for these.

Thank you for your answer. Yes, I was thinking that since most shows in the 60's ran about 25 to 26 minutes per half hour, and 50 to 52 minutes per full hour, that the episode versions on this DVD set were edited versions. You have set my mind at ease. Thanks again!

No problem.

By the way, another thing that causes further confusion is that animated programming intended for an adult audience (for example "The Flintstones") also ran around 25 minutes.

Just thought of the main reason why I was so sure this DVD was missing time, the DVD Johnny Quest that I have was on time for after 24 minutes. After your post, I realized that Jhonny Quest was also a prime time show, along with the Flinstones and Jetsons. Again, thanks!

Everyone is giving incorrect information here.

The original Space Ghost Dino Boy did indeed run for 25 min each but the DVD sped the cartoon up as does the current Boomerang airings. The full episodes are indeed there uncut but you will find them moving a little faster than the originals.

Batman on HUB is doing the same thing.

When stepping through the vob with avisynth I saw no evidence of time compression or blended frames outside of standard NTSC telecine. It is hard coded pulldown and not progressive and very grainy/noisy but I think it is not sped up. It seems that Saturday morning cartoons were 22 minutes and not 25.

The Herculoids dvd is also not progressive and noisy. Maybe both were taken from a video master. There seems to have been no work put into cleaning them up at all and I have read where they don't always play so good. Jonny Quest dvd set looks much better and is progressive but low bitrate.

WA typically tries to do a little clean up but they lack the time or budget to make everything perfect. A lot of people seem to have taken that remaster/restore are the same word, which is not the case. Looking chronologically you can tell that for the most part some masters simply held up in better condition than others. Which given what they are and how some were used more than others and some are older than others i'm not exactly surprised.

WHV on the other hand is qustionable, we know WA has no real choice but to work with what the masters are in the vault, but WHV has been accused of using some lesser prints because they didn't feel like doing any work at all on fixing the masters.

As far as "not playing so good". I think this is more than likely problems with their DVD players being more sensitive to MOD discs. I have a Magnavox that does this. On some of them it like skips like there is some kind of smudge but i have taken said disc done nothing to it put it into another brand dvd player, on my laptop, on my ps2, and on my xbox360 and never had any problem with any of those MOD discs.

Sadly if it is your only dvd player and it has problems, you aren't going to be happy, but if it's an actual disc problem WB will replace it for you for one that should work. I had a wrong disc and they took care of it fast.
