Why did this show mean so much to so many?

I don't understand my own continued interest in this show and the paths of each monkee thereafter. It was my favorite show on Saturday mornings as a kid. But I liked other shows too--the Brady Bunch, the Partridge Family, etc. When I see an old episode of those shows, I can't believe I was ever entertained by it. What's so special about the Monkees?

I realize that this is a late post, but I just wanna say that I hope those men who molested you had their sorry asses thrown in prison.
And they're still in prison.

I don't understand why you'd even question or reason for liking it.

That's an incredibly sad read, Amy. So sorry you had to endure all that as a kid. I hope they all got what was coming to them.

I cannot watch The Monkees and not be in a good mood. Escapism indeed.

I'll finally get to see The Monkees. I'm hoping I can great them to say thank you. They made my childhood a joy.

I bought a ticket to see them in September.
To me, the Monkees were more fun than the Beatles and the Monkees had a TV show. The Beatles had a cartoon series (and I watched that also) but the Monkees seemed to be having a better time on their show. I guess I loved the music more, that's all.

I'm glad you are getting to see them too! I'm so excited.

The show was fun, as a pre-teen (11~12, when I first saw it). What made me truly appreciate it was finding out how the band, contrived initially, fought for music creativity. And won. Especially considering their 4 unique styles. Something no manufactured band, not even "The Runaways", managed.

"Headquarters" and the next 3 or 4 albums afterward are legitimately great stuff, which is not to disparage the first two that did have contributions from some bandmembers.

Some Monkees TV show episodes hold up well after 50 years. Others feel embarrassing to watch. But it was a kids' show and season 2 holds up for me better because it's not aimed exclusively at younger kids. And the music is still great.

so, can you please explain to me how is this show legendary and classic and cherished among everyone considering the fact it was only on for 2 seasons? 2 seasons??? no other show in the history of television has ever had legendary status after being on for only 2 seasons.

reply

also, why is this show so important and so memorable considering the fact that it was only on for a measly 2 seasons and years!!!??? no other show in the history of television has ever been celebrated, loved, cherished, and famous after only being on for 2 seasons.

even star trek was on for at least 3 seasons. and they always talk about how amazing that that is considering how famous of a show it is and how famous the franchise of star trek is but this show's legacy is unreal, 2 seasons and all this acclaim and legend????!!!

I would challenge anyone on here to please give me any other show in the history of television that has had legendary and classic status, the same as this show which was on for 2 seasons or less.

It's common in England to end shows after only a few years. Plus, the average Brit show only does six episodes a year. Look at The Office – 12 episodes and one Christmas bonus show. It has spawned the nine-year American version, plus, a movie and soundtrack/David Brent album.

Or the Honeymooners. one season with 39 episodes. Every fat husband with a hot wife sitcom from the Flintstones to King of Queens owes something to Jackie Gleason.

reply

there is no way that the honeymooners was only on for one season.

there is a difference between a few years and 2 years. the office was not only on for 12 episodes.

reply

Do your research. The Honeymooners began as a recurring sketch on the Calvacade of Stars, but the Honeymooners that we know and love β€œthe Classic 39” ran from Oct. 1, 1955 – Sept. 22, 1956.

The British Office ran 12 episodes and a two-part Christmas episode.

reply

ok, fine maybe it was so then it's absolutely astounding, astounding that it is one of the best shows of all time. how in the world did they pull that off after just one season??????

The show has multiple generations of fans I got hooked in 1986 when they regained popularity with MTV and Nick at Nite showings of the TV show. As a result Monkee mania returned for a brief time with an anniversary tour that brought in new fans. I liked the show more first because they were funny and grew to like the music later.

reply

I don't think they regained popularity.

They were in reruns before that.
