Actually, the 1982 part is wrong.
From reading the book by Peter Marshall and watching the E! Hollywood story, the actual end of syndication for the original Squares was in 1981. I have seen lots of books referencing 1982 as the end year, in fact. After NBC closed the show down in 1980, the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas put on the show for 1 season, but the crew and cast didn't really feel comfortable there, and Peter Marshall got robbed in his hotel room.
Maybe people got the 1982 date because that was the year Paul Lynde died.
