Victoria's Patents

I'm relatively new to Dark Shadows and have started from the beginning. I'm sure this has already been discussed, but can someone please help me out.

I've read that the mystery of Victoria's parents is never solved as she eventually leaves the show and focus is shifted to the supernatural. I thought this initial mystery was quite good. I've seen an interview with Joan Bennett where she announced she was Victoria's mother. I've also read a story that had Victoria's mother being Rose Barlow, the friend of Elizabeth. Roses father is a Dr. Curing patients of a strange disease and Rose gets pregnant by one of the patients she fell in love with. Victoria's father leaves before she is born because he dorsntcwant her affected by his disease. Rose and her father eventually die and a gypsy woman that lived with them kidnaps Victoria away from Collinsport. Due to a curse the gypsy woman drops Victoria at the foundling home and secretly sends money. Elizabeth who swore to Rose that she would take care of her baby searches years and years for her whereabouts through private investigators eventually locating her and sending for her. Elizabeth is sure that Victiria is Roses daughter because they look the same.

So I was wondering what is the official fan perspective on who Victoria's parents were and how it all played out. Is there an official consensus or is it still a mystery?

reply

The show went supernatural way before the departure of Victoria's character. Disappointingly, we never do get to find out who Victoria's parents were which is a shame because it was a big mystery which never got the closure it deserved.

reply

Thanks. Do you have a theory? Wondering what fans thought? Or is it a draw your own conclusion thing?

reply

You're welcome. I like to think Elizabeth was Victoria's mother. I wish they would have used that plot element in the series. BTW, IMDb will be shutting down on February 20th. I'm going to miss good ol' pals like Fletcher, Winston & Co. We've had some good (and quite often fun) times here.

DoctorJulia Hoffman,

I did not know that this site is closing down, very sad news, indeed. Discussing Dark Shadows with you and the other posters here has been great fun. Did you know that DS is also discussed on the Dark Shadows Forums web site? You should log on there to discuss the show.

Yes, it's very sad news, Attillio. Likewise, discussing "Dark Shadows" with you has been great fun. I didn't know about the Dark Shadows Forums website. Thanks for telling me. Hope to chat with you and all of my other IMDb friends (Fletcher, Winston, vito, et al) there.

As for Vicky's mystery, surely that Betty Handcomb portrait has something to do with it. And Liz' lawyer Richard Garner also knows something about it.

reply

The Betty Handcomb portrait did seem like it would have something to do with it even though many early episodes strongly pointed a finger at Elizabeth. Will you be using the Dark Shadows Forums website, Fletcher?

reply

Lol. It's supposed to be Betty Hanscomb.
Someone (Carolyn?) mistook the name for Hanson, the name of the guy Roger hit with Burke's car.
Maybe I'll check out those sites after this one dissolves. I'm banking on political reasons for putting a stop to these message boards.

reply

I was going by your Betty Handcomb (instead of Hanscomb). Yours is too funny and a good way to cheer us up after the dreadful news of IMDb ending. I'll check out the other sites, Fletcher. I hope to chat with you people there.

reply

Likewise.

reply

Julia, was it you who had theory that Carolyn was older than Victoria? Someone here did. Anyway, I know we all shared our theories about Vic's parentage; it was a good discussion. I wish I had printed it.

reply

Lainie, it was someone else's theory. Oh, how I wish they followed through with the plot element of Victoria's parentage. After all that building up, they ultimately did nothing with it. It's a bit irksome, but the show has its compensations.

reply

Wow, Victoria had patents? On what? She should've gone on Shark Tank!

reply

New design of filigreed fountain pens.

When I watched the show I sensed that Victoria was related to the Collins family, on the episodes I saw, when Barnabas came on, they always treated Victoria like a member of the family, not as just an employee.
