Wasn't there another show similar to this on another network at the same time that this aired? Sort of a competing show?

Not sure. Perhaps you were thinking of "Gentle Ben", which was made by the same producer, Ivan Tors?

"Cowboy in Africa". Also called "Africa, Texas Style".

Yes there was, (way more similar than any if the shows listed by previous responders - I mean, Gentle Ben! YeH, cuz a bear in the swamps if Florida is JUST LIKE a lion in the Savannas of Aftica! ;-) )but it was too long ago and I don't recall the name. Hopefully someone else does.

Dunno, but wasn't the show a spin off of the movie Clarence the cross eyed Lion?

You aren't thinking about Tarzan, are you?

There were similarities between Daktari and Tarzan, to be sure, but one huge difference: No human characters (and very few animals) ever were killed or died on Daktari. In Tarzan, plenty of people were killed, particularly the villains.
