Disappointing DVD, MGM screwed up!

Where to begin? Well, let's see...the vibrant colors that could have only come from the Sixties are not correctly presented here. (And neither is the film's original aspect ratio, incredibly apparent during the title sequence.) Even if the negative was not in mint condition, the technology to restore the colors to what was seen during the original release does exist. And speaking of restoration, how about restoring the material cut from the film? Why the studio snipped scenes for the DVD release is totally unjustifiable. Not the first time this has happened, but such product tampering should be marked as having been altered from its original content.

my (conspiratorial) opinion -

the first DVD they put out is going to be the easiest thing for them to do - no restoration, wrong frame ratio, bad print, etc.

After a bunch of fans have bought the DVD and they've squeezed enough money out of it, THEN, they'll release the "special edition" - with commentary, restored print, deleted scenes, etc. So they'll make twice as much money from all the people going back to buy the special edition.

does the DVD they released have any special features (other than the theatrical trailer)? I'm curious.

"What's New Pussycat", "What's New Tiger Lily" and "The Party" are some great examples of the "wacky 60s movie".

Pretty much a bare bones affair, with trailer as the only extra. Totally agree with your other three Sixties picks!

so is the DVD worth buying? i just saw it on TCM, are the colors duller?

Well, it's not my favorite film, but I saw it enough times on KTVU Channel 2 that I became pretty familiar with the broadcast version.

To be honest I'm not sure what scenes are missing from the DVD version of the film. It actually looks okay to me, but I never saw this flick in the theatres.

What's missing?

Please enlighten :-)

Anyone care to answer my question?

reply

What are you talking about? The original aspect ratio is 1.66:1.

-What's missing?

I don't know the film prior to getting the DVD but there seems to be jumpy edits when Sellers and O'Toole meet in the strip club and at the group therapy session when the woman mentions her sexual problem.

reply

Aren't the jump cuts from the original print? The film was never that cleverly edited...
