who's the little person?

I liked the little person because he was kind to the little boy, and illustrated Draco's dark side.

Yes, the Falconer was a great character. Only one weakness, perhaps lost in the film's many cuts, was a little more on wny he chose to betray the secret that the Frisian prince was held in the Tower to the northern raiders. It's hinted he expected a rich reward for the info but it could have been better explained.

I thought the reason Volc the falconer betrayed Sir Crisagon de la Croix was that he was badly treated with the most appalling disrespect. Draco tries to beat him up. Draco tosses a cup of wine in his face. Crisagon took away from Volc the little Frisian prince, whom no one knew was a prince at the time. That was probably the last straw for Volc.

Now few people except historians know this but in the ancient world, dwarves like Volc were thought to be exceptionally intelligent, diligent, and subject matter experts on certain things. Volc's expertise was falconing.

The movie shows us the dark side of the early Middle Ages, circa, 1000 - 1066 A.D. There's much darkness, superstition, and ignorance even among the upper social classes. Good manners and courtesy seem to be missing from the local customs and social mores of the time. The movie shows people of the time period could be quite brusque.

Volc shouldn't have betrayed his employer, Crisagon, but I understand why he was pushed to it. Volc found far more acceptance and friendship from the local villagers, who treated him nicely and generously, accepting him as one of their own, you notice almost like a minor celebrity. No one made fun of his dwarfism. Volc even found female companionship among the villagers it seems. No wonder Volc began to feel a kinship with the villagers and wanted in his own way to protect them, even if it meant defecting, a crime punishable by death in that time period and often a brutal one.

He was OK. But I would have preferred to have seen little person actor, Skip Martin in this role. He would have really relished Draco's dark side.
