This movie currently has a 2.7 rating on imdb . . .

. . . which means that people are no fun.

Touche! I couldn't agree more. Same can be said about "Tormented" which got a 2.9

I have loved this movie ever since I was about 10 (in 1971) when I first saw this on TV. Yes it is fun but it is really a bad movie. I think the rating is for that not the camp appeal. On a camp scale it is a ten. But the special effects are so cheap it is funny now as an adult to see it.

i think it means people were by and large out of weed when they saw the film.

To be fair, I would give this about a 4, and the Mystery Science Theatr Version riff on it a 10.

It should go up to 11 for this movie though. That's how good Ron Howard + MST3K is.

I gave this film an 8, so it ain't my fault. I thought this flick was awful damn funny and entertaining.

Wow.........this is wayyyyyyyyyy to low a rating. C'mon, it has everything, from dancing, to giant birds/dogs/kids, choreography from non-other than Toni ("Hey Mickey" fame!) Basil, a very young Ron Howard, and well heck, it's just a TON of fun, Mary Jane or no Mary Jane (although that DOES increase the likeability factor)------I view this at least once a year----loved it as a kid when it came out, and still do. Great cast, too!! I'd give it an 8.5 for sure!!

I love this piece of cheese! I like the scene where Genius works on an antidote and a ghastly, carrot like creature crawls out of a test tube and into a sink!

Genius: (deadpan expression) Well, back to the drawing board!

Tisha Sterling is a babe!

reply

Yeah, great stuff!!! I just wish, and I know it won't happen, as most don't revel in this films glory..........but a widescreen version would make me ever so happy!

reply

It seems like if people dislike a film or it's cheesy, they automatically give it a 1. I have very rarely given a 1 because I find something to appreciate in almost every movie I see. As for this film, I gave it a 6 because I am fun (but not that fun).

One of my favorite reference guidebooks is "Hollywood Rock" by Marshall Crenshaw (1994), where virtually every movie made concerning Rock n' Roll is summarized (by a number of reviewers) and rated on three separate categories; music, attitude, and fun. This one gets top-rank five stars in all three, putting some emphasis on Jack Nitzsche's kickass score.

reply

Thanks for the heads-up on "Hollywood Rock." I love that book, just as I love Marshall Crenshaw. I didn't even know this film was listed there. I always check that book for more traditional rock 'n' soul movies, but it also has off-the-beaten-track films like this with great scores.

was watching this on svengoolie tonight (The U in chicago). This is not fun, sorry. It's possible the most boring, ridiculous movie I have ever seen. I've seen a lot of bad movies, but wow. Where is this fun at ALL? It's repetitive and boring. It was like a bad 70's soul train where they dance in slow motion to bad 70's music. If you found this to be fun you may have some serious issues (j/k). I finally just shut it off. It was a waste of time... even with the sven sound.

1 out of 10

SEEMS(I say seems, do not know) that they throw out a lot of higher votes and only allow snooty Rex Reed types' votes to be counted.

reply

I gave it an 8 because Beau is so furry cute in a cubish sort of way

Loved this! It was stupid. It was cheezy. It had the Beau Brummels (a now forgotten B-list British band, all they could get, I guess.) It had the actors doing the Frug. I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

My favorite parts: everyone standing around all blase at the sight of a giant tarantula, or giant teenagers in the most professional looking homemade belly dancing costumes, and togas, every whipped together from curtains. It was like a bad star trek episode!

reply

This is an absolutely classic train wreck of a movie. I loved it when the sheriff first sees the giant teenagers, and his first comment isn't "Wow, what's with the giant people", it's that someone's been messing around in the old theater, and he has a good idea who. Ha!

This movie immediately moved into a high spot on my favorite ridiculously bad movies of all time. I'm surprised it's not mentioned in Ron Howard commentary more often. Definitely worth watching.

This movie is groovy man...and I think it's a lot more fun than a lot of movies that are made nowadays. The music is awesome, the chicks are hot, and it's just all around fun. It's so bad its good, and that's the fun of it. There aren't many movies that exist like this anymore. The sixties..... :) :)
