I think I've seen this...

I think I saw this movie when I was a kid, at the San Francisco Asian Art Museum, probably some weekend in the late 1980s or early 90s... all I remember is that the monkey had some kind of magic staff or pole that would shrink or grow... I remember thinking it was fantastic, and I think I saw it with like two hundred other little kids (it was a huge auditorium).

Was anybody else there? Is this the right movie?
