I would very much like to see this movie with English subtitles.
But I don't think it even exists. I saw it projected at school when I was very young.
I don't think it had subtitles then either, but I found it absolutely fascinating.
Do you have any idea if such a thing exists and where i might find it?

If so please contact me at [email protected]
Thank you,

The 40th Anniversay Edition box contains 2 DVDs, one with the film (parts I and II) and the other with some interesting special features, such as a much earlier black & white film made on another episode of the adventures of the Monkey King (the "Flaming Mountain" episode). The "Flaming Mountain" is really funny because it is halfway between Disney's (Micky Mouse) animation and the "true" Chinese animation achieved in Uproar in Heaven-- a really strange mix!

The sound and image on the DVD is very well-remastered apart from some occasion and small artifacts/scratches which are not distracting. And I liked the commemorative documentary which has interviews with the few original animators and voice actors who are still alive-- the Jade/Heavenly Emperor is actually modelled after the chubby face of its voice actor!

Unfortunately, ONLY Chinese (traditional & simplified) subtitles are provided.

A REALLY well-remastered DVD is the 25th Anniversary DVD of "Nezha Nao Hai" (Nezha Conquers the Dragon King) which comes with (Chinese &) English subtitles! It totally wipes the floor with Disney's Mulan (just my personal fanatical opinion) in terms of Chinese fantasy art and, of course, kung-fu, animation.

Too bad Uproar in Heaven isn't subtitled. Or narrated in english too. I saw this one as a kid too and it is a great film. Nowadays the little chillun is only fed american or japanese crap for animated entertainment.

Thank you so much, HuangKun!
I just ordered The Monkey King on DVD, and I'm almost dancing from joy! I've been looking for this film for the last couple of years! And I've loved it, since I saw it for the first time when I was three years old....
This is so great!!!!

Warning.
I too ordered the new 40th edition and was disappointed. First It did not play on my new Panasonic blue ray player or our high quality Panasonic DVD player. It only played on an old VCR/DVD combo player.
I have the original recorded on VHS and know just how much was left out of this DVD 40th Anniversary Edition. When Monkey returns to the flower and fruit mountian the first time a scene where the little monkeys are playing was completly omited so were the fairies singing and the second time monkey returns with the stolen banquet. The emperor being served by phoenix women didn't exist in this new edition and when monkey gets drunk and finds the pills of immortality is gone and even the final fight scene and when he is made guardian of the peaches was cut short.
I was so disappointed. I love this cartoon and I didn't care about lack of subtitles but to take out so much just broke my heart. If you know the original you will be disappointed.

The original film stock for these scenes was so badly damaged that they decided to edit these scenes out altogether for the DVD release. I'm sure VHS and other sources for these scenes exist elsewhere-- but even if the Shanghai Studio can hold of them, I don't think they will be good enough for a DVD release.

So the only hope of seeing the "full" film is if someone decides financed a "restoration" of it, where these scenes are re-filmed/re-animated based on the surviving sources/storyboards. But then there is also the danger that whoever produces the restoration will be tempted to "up-date" the film with new special effects, etc...

Well, at least the first half of the film, and classic sequences like the transformation-&-chase scene, is complete-- that alone was worth the price of the DVD for me.

Why do people who don't care keep telling other people not to care?

The only integral version you can find is a dubbed french one.

This is the best one you can find.

There is equally a good fan restoration on a specialized website.
