3D Version of the original 1965 movie...???

What happened to the 3D version? In november -09 there was a press-release saying that a 3D version of the original Monkey King/Havoc in Heaven should be released this very summer. I haven't seen any more about it, no release dates, no more news, nothing. So?

"Chinese filmmakers announced a 3D version of 1964's Uproar in Heaven (also known as Havoc in Heaven) to hit the big screen next summer, with only slight changes in dialogue and music." From: "Asiapacific Arts", or read longer article on: http://english.cri.cn/6666/2009/11/24/1261s531479.htm

The 3D "Monkey King" starts filming in October 2010-- the cast and crew have brought on board... and Donnie Yen (playing the Monkey King) has gone in to get his 3D body "mould" made and scanned last week.

But it is NOT really a 3D version/adaptation of the 1964 "Uproar in Heaven"-- which covers only the first 5-10 chapters (where there was an "Uproar in Heaven") of the 16th century comic-fantasy novel "Journey to the West"-- as the 3D movie will feature characters and events from the later parts of the novel.

Thanks for yr reply, Don't be so BBC, but the Donnie Yen thing is another Movie. What was announced was a re-release of the 1965 movie. It's the same movie, but was suppose to be converted into 3D with some updated dialogue and music.

And yet another year has gone by without further news...

With all the recent complaints/failures of the so-called "3D conversion" of 2D films-- it's no wonder this project died a natural death, as all money-grabbing gimmicks do... sigh, there goes another chance for them to do a proper restoration of the surviving film stock.

The project is in production right now. IT is a collaboration between the Shanghai Animation Film Studio and Technicolor.

Scheduled to hit theaters with new score and voice over early 2012.

It was showcased last week at the Shanghai Film Festival

Yay! The China premiere of the 3D conversion of Uproar in Heavan has been announced as 12 January 2012!

On the downside, the full 100+ min film has been cut down to 80+ mins (similar to the 40th Anniversary Edition DVD, storyline intact with some missing scenes)-- wonder if hiring James Cameron's "Avatar" team to do the 3D restoration/conversion was proving too expensive...

On the upside, the voice actors they got for the new stereo/surround audio manage to sound almost exactly like the original voice cast-- probably due to the fact that visuals/timings are already "set in stone", so they can't really change the script/dialogue.

I've just got my copy from yesasia.com and I'm super-happy, the restoration on this bluray is one of the best non-disney restorations I've seen on any animated movie, it looks and sounds great compared to my old DVD version.

There is unfortunately no extras on the disc but it contains both the 2D and the 3D versions so it still is pretty good.

For anyone who is interested, it can be ordered from http://www.yesasia.com/global/the-monkey-king-uproar-in-heaven-blu-ray-2d-3d-metalpack-english-subtitled/1031255780-0-0-0-en/info.html.
It is a chinese release but it contains english subtitles and is region free (it works in my region B player).
